  • HIVMA HIV Research Award

The HIV Research Award recognizes HIVMA members who have made outstanding contributions to HIV medicine in clinical or basic research. Nominees must actively be engaged in HIV research and must be junior to mid-career, such as an associate professor or its equivalent for an institution without a formal academic rank. The award will be based on innovation and originality and require demonstration of significant independent research (such as success in securing independent peer-reviewed grant funding) and productivity (such as publications in peer-reviewed journals). 2014 HIV Research Award Winner

    persaud_award Deborah Persaud, MD

Deborah Persaud, MD, for the past 17 years, she has conducted groundbreaking studies of HIV latency in newborns, infants, and children, extending and perfecting techniques developed in collaboration with Dr. Robert Siliciano in the 1990s. Dr. Persaud was the first to demonstrate and quantify the latent HIV reservoir in resting T cells in infants, developing sensitive methods for detecting replication-competent proviruses in these young patients from whom larger volumes of blood could not be obtained. She initially showed that children face the same challenges as adults with respect to viral eradication. Her work has been critical to developing treatment standards and guidelines for children worldwide and has spurred more intensive investigation of differences in reservoirs and eradication strategies for HIV in children. Nature selected her as one of the publication’s Top 10 scientists for 2013, while Time named her to its “100 Most Influential People in the World” list for that same year. Dr. Persaud’s research has left an indelible fingerprint in the field of pediatric HIV and made enormous inroads into understanding HIV latency in infants and children.
