Nominees must actively be engaged in HIV research and must be junior to mid-career, such as an associate professor or its equivalent for an institution without a formal academic rank. The award will be based on innovation and originality and require demonstration of significant independent research (such as success in securing independent peer-reviewed grant funding) and productivity (such as publications in peer-reviewed journals). Bassett_2015 Ingrid V. Bassett, MD, MPH, FIDSA

Ingrid V. Bassett, MD, MPH, FIDSA, is known for her work in South Africa on HIV and tuberculosis screening, loss to follow-up before antiretroviral therapy is started, and linkage to and retention in care Dr. Bassett executed a routine HIV screening program at McCord Hospital in Durban, South Africa and fostered a project in 2007 that led to one of the first demonstrations of the impact of a routine HIV testing program in South Africa or in any resource-limited setting and resulted in local officials continuing the program. As associate professor of medicine at Massachusetts School, and director of mentoring for the Harvard University Center for AIDS Research, Dr. Bassett continues high-impact investigations that influence clinical HIV research and treatment around the world. Building on her earlier research, Dr. Bassett was the principal investigator of the longitudinal STIAL (South African, Test, Identify, and Link) Cohort, which demonstrated critical barriers in the loss to follow-up of newly identified patients with HIV. Her current research focuses on the clinical impact of mobile, community-based HIV screening and rapid TB testing using GeneXpert Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA and resistance to rifampicin.
