  • HIVMA Urges HHS to Accept IOM Recommendation on HIV Screening for Women

In a letter to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, HIVMA Board Chair Kathleen Squires, MD applauded the Institute of Medicine’s inclusion of annual HIV screening for sexually active women among recommendations for women’s preventive services that should be covered free of cost-sharing.  The letter urges HHS to adopt the HIV screening recommendation.

"On behalf of the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) I am writing to express our strong support for the recommendation by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) that annual HIV counseling and screening for sexually active women be among the preventive services that health insurance plans must cover at no cost. The IOM report, 'Clinical Preventive Services for Women: Closing the Gaps,' notes that evidence to support a recommendation for expanding screening is based on federal goals from the CDC, as well as clinical professional guidelines, such as those from the American College of Physicians, HIVMA, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American Medical Association, and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology."
