HIV Clinical Fellowship Program

The HIV Clinical Fellowship Program, a joint program of the IDSA Foundation and HIVMA, was established in 2007 to support non-infectious diseases physicians in gaining HIV clinical experience by serving patient populations who have historically been medically underserved and/or marginalized. From 2007 to 2024, the program awarded grants to 33 fellows who completed a year of HIV clinical training, with the majority pursuing careers in HIV and/or public health and emerging as leaders in the field.
HIVMA staff conducted a final evaluation of the fellowship program after the last fellow completed their training in June 2025. To better understand the program’s impact and guide future efforts, HIVMA staff reviewed the experiences of past fellows, tracked their career outcomes and explored ways HIVMA can continue to support HIV clinical training, especially given the demand for this expertise.
- Summary results of how the program has impacted the career outcomes of past fellows with valuable clinical experience, mentorship and exposure to diverse health care systems
- Description of program challenges and recommendations from alumni of the program to better inform future efforts
- A summary of follow-up interviews that were done to gather more insight into past fellows’ experience and to identify gaps in HIV clinical training, and how HIVMA can fill that gap
HIVMA would like to thank the members of the HIV Clinical Fellowship Committee over the past 17 years for their contributions to the program’s success. We are also grateful to the IDSA Foundation and the following sponsors for their financial support over the years: ViiV, Gilead Foundation, Merck, Abbott, Bristol Myers Squibb, Boehringer Ingelheim, GlaxoSmithKline, Janssen, Pfizer, Roche, and Tibotec.
