FHCSD’s HIV Medicine Track provides a longitudinal experience in outpatient management of HIV infection with the goal of realizing competence that allows graduates to incorporate HIV medicine as a portion of their primary care practice. Beginning in their PGY-2 year, family medicine residents participate in a supervised continuity clinic in which they will develop a small panel of patients with HIV. Mentorship is provided by an infectious diseases board-certified physician, and learning is supplemented with online resources and participation in the biweekly telehealth program of the Pacific AETC, the HIV Learning Network.
Program Start: June
Program Length: 2 years (PGY-2 and 3 of family medicine residency)
Applications Accepted: April 1 (annually)
Related Experience/Interests: Residency program with a concentration in HIV
Eligibility: This program exists as a track within an existing ACGME-accredited family medicine residency; therefore, admission is limited to two PGY-2 residents who have been accepted to the family medicine program.

The Sutter Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency has historically been a national leader in training family doctors to provide HIV care. Since 2012, in addition to the standard HIV curriculum for all residents, interested rising 2nd-year residents may apply to pursue a 2-year Area of Concentration (AoC). This HIV AoC is part of the National HIV Residency Pathway Consortium and includes joining our continuity clinic’s Ryan White-funded multidisciplinary HIV team at Santa Rosa Community Health. The HIV AoC goal is to inspire residents to continue to provide care for HIV positive populations as an integral part of their practice beyond graduation. Selection preference is given to those planning to practice HIV family medicine in the United States after graduation (preferably in Northern California)
