The HIV Clinical Leadership Program, in partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services and USC PAETC, is a unique fellowship training program for physicians committed to improving primary care for people with HIV in underserved communities. This program brings together the unique strengths of DHS, the USC Keck School of Medicine’s AIDS Education Training Center, UCLA’s National Clinician Scholars Program and ViiV Healthcare. The purpose of this fellowship is to provide physicians with the knowledge and skills necessary to be experts in HIV care, to be health systems leaders and to be successful community partners in patient-centered and community-specific HIV interventions.

Program Length: Option of 24 months ($150,000 loan assistance) or 12 months (50,000 loan assistance)

This is a community medicine fellowship at Kaiser Permanente, Los Angeles Medical Center, which accommodates three half-days a week in the HIV/ID Clinic and throughout various nonprofit community clinics throughout Los Angeles County.

This one-year fellowship (with optional second year) provides in-depth clinical training in HIV medicine. Our goal is to train clinicians for a diverse career in HIV medicine by developing outstanding skills in HIV primary care including management of antiretroviral therapy, drug resistance and opportunistic infections. In addition, fellows will obtain skills in HIV prevention including management of pre-exposure prophylaxis and sexually transmitted infections. Moreover, fellows will gain experience in managing common comorbidities including viral hepatitis, anal dysplasia, substance use and mental illness. Core rotations will be within the multidisciplinary Kaiser Permanente Oakland and San Francisco HIV programs, which treat over 4,000 HIV patients annually. Fellows will also rotate at community-based, public health and academic clinics locally and have an opportunity for a global health elective. In addition, fellows will have a structured didactic curriculum, journal club and close mentorship from a diverse faculty. As part of a large, integrated health system, fellows will have unique opportunities for research and quality improvement projects with the support of dedicated research staff in the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research.
