The HIV Medicine Association is pleased to announce the election of Philip Bolduc, MD, FIDSA, as the new chair of its Board of Directors. HIVMA is a community of health care professionals who advance a comprehensive and humane response to the HIV pandemic, informed by science and social justice. The Association also announced a new vice chair and named five new directors.
Dr. Bolduc is a professor of family medicine and community health at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and centers his academic work on promoting primary care-based HIV and hepatitis care. He is the principal investigator of the New England AIDS Education and Training Center and the HIV Program and Fellowship Program director at the Family Health Center of Worcester, Massachusetts, where he cares for diverse and historically excluded populations. His academic and clinical work focuses on integrating HIV and viral hepatitis care into primary care, particularly in community health center settings, and advancing education and training for the next generation of HIV care providers. He has served on the HIVMA Board of Directors since 2021.
“I am reminded every day of how deeply meaningful this work is: caring for underserved communities and helping prepare the next generation of leaders in HIV care,” said Dr. Bolduc. “As chair, I am committed to working alongside my fellow Board members to expand access to health care and coverage for people with and vulnerable to HIV, while sustaining and strengthening a robust, diverse and culturally responsive HIV workforce. At a time when changes in policy and growing threats to science, research, HIV funding and care infrastructure are creating unprecedented challenges, our work has never been more important. We must remain steadfast in advancing evidence-based care, protecting the progress we have made, and ensuring that everyone affected by HIV has access to the care and services they need.”
Nada A. Fadul, MD, FIDSA, elected to serve as vice chair, is professor of medicine and associate dean of faculty affairs at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Medicine in Omaha. She was medical director of Nebraska’s largest HIV clinic serving urban and rural populations from 2019 to 2025, and is director and co-lead of the UNMC Sudan ECHO Global Health Program. She has been a principal investigator and director for Ryan White Parts C & D grants since 2013. Dr. Fadul has been involved in HIVMA for several years, serving on the Board of Directors since 2023 and chairing the HIVMA Awards Committee from 2021 to 2024. She has been principal investigator and leader of multiple HIV implementation science initiatives, including telehealth, long-acting ART implementation, street medicine and emergency department HIV testing. Committed to advancing equitable access to HIV care, Dr. Fadul is dedicated to advancing innovative, patient-centered HIV care and prevention and supporting HIVMA’s mission.
The five newly elected HIVMA Board members are:
- Bismarck S. Bisono Garcia, MD, is an infectious diseases physician at the Mayo Clinic’s HIV clinic, and is an assistant professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine & Science in Rochester, Minnesota. In addition to his meaningful involvement in HIVMA and IDSA advocacy activities on Capitol Hill, Dr. Bisono Garcia has been a member of the IDSA Advocacy Captains Subcommittee, the IDSA Coordinating Council and the IDSA Fellows Community of Practice, serving as chair in 2024-2025. Driven by a passion for advocacy and improvement of care for minorities and underserved communities, especially people with HIV, he plans to contribute to HIVMA’s strategic priorities of advancing HIV prevention and care and expanding HIVMA’s national impact as a leader in the goal of ending the HIV epidemic.
- Christopher (Chris) Bositis, MD, is a professor of family and community medicine at the University of California-San Francisco and clinical director of the Ryan White-funded National Clinician Consultation Center. His clinical career has focused on improving access to care for historically marginalized communities, especially those suffering disproportionately from the overlapping ID/SUD syndemic, and he currently provides HIV primary care at San Francisco General Hospital’s Ward 86. Dr. Bositis has been a member of the HIVMA Ryan White Medical Providers Coalition Committee since 2015, serving as chair from 2020 to 2024. He has extensive experience in diverse practice settings both domestically and internationally, and has helped develop and lead a variety of clinical and training initiatives focused on syndemic care and workforce development. Dr. Bositis hopes to use his clinical, leadership and advocacy experience to support HIVMA in promoting policies and programs that expand equitable access to HIV care and prevention for all who need it during these pivotal times.
- Philip A. Chan, MD, MS, is a professor of medicine at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and consultant medical director at the Rhode Island Department of Health. He also is chief medical officer at Open Door Health, a Ryan White-funded, community-based clinic that addresses unmet needs in providing HIV care and prevention, which he helped start in 2020 in urban Providence. He has worked collaboratively across public health, clinical, research and community sectors to improve HIV care and prevention locally and nationally. Dr. Chan has led several clinical, research and programmatic initiatives related to HIV care and prevention, including as the lead investigator on multiple NIH, CDC, SAMHSA and other grants, with approximately 300 peer-reviewed articles. He believes in the need for relationship building with organizations and entities, and especially affected communities, to effectively promote HIV care and prevention.
- Philana Liang, PA-C, MPH, is a physician assistant at Washington University Infectious Disease Clinic in St. Louis, Missouri, and program manager at the St. Louis Preventing Training Center. Liang co-founded the National Consortium of Advanced Practice Providers in Sexual Health. She is a member of the HIVMA Workforce Advisory Group. Liang has a close relationship with the hospital system Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners to facilitate management of STI/HIV exposures, testing and PEP access, and she is intentional about reaching out to local universities to set up PEP in student health. As a Board member, she hopes to assist in innovating improved access to HIV care/prevention, elevating the workforce, and increasing APP membership and participation.
- Carlos S. Saldana, MD, is an assistant professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and an HIV clinician at Ponce de Leon Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He has been involved in IDSA and HIVMA as a member of the Early-Career Community and the G.E.R.M. Committee. Dr. Saldana is a former HIV medical advisor for the Georgia Department of Public Health and current principal investigator of multiple federally funded initiatives. He has led efforts to expand access to HIV prevention, care and treatment through bilingual peer navigation, telemedicine, mobile health services and community-engaged interventions, and he is dedicated to advancing equitable HIV prevention and care for Latino and immigrant communities in the U.S. South. Dr. Saldana has also worked with the Southeast AIDS Education and Training Center and is committed to preparing the next generation of HIV leaders through clinical teaching, mentorship and workforce development activities.
