HIVMA Applauds President’s Budget to Create National PrEP Program

HIVMA applauds President Biden for calling for the creation of a national PrEP program with an investment of $9.8 billion in mandatory funding over 10 years in his fiscal year 2023 budget proposal. A national PrEP program is needed to dramatically reduce new HIV cases and address significant disparities in PrEP access among populations who have been heavily impacted by the HIV epidemic. While 1.2 million individuals could benefit from this highly effective form of prevention, only 25% have been prescribed PrEP. The numbers drop even further for Black and Hispanic/Latino individuals, to 9% and 16%. HIVMA looks forward to working with Congress and HIV community members to advance this important program that would be a critical step forward in ending HIV as an epidemic in the U.S.
