Monkeypox Bill Provides Crucial Steps Toward Equitable Access to Testing

The Infectious Diseases Society of America applauds new legislation introduced by Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) to ensure monkeypox testing is available at no cost to the public. Requiring federal and commercial plans to cover testing and providing free testing for uninsured individuals are crucial steps to expand equitable access to testing. Testing that is available to all who need it is a key component of a successful outbreak response — facilitating access to treatment and enabling individuals who test positive to isolate and prevent transmission. IDSA urges Congress to enact this measure swiftly.
